Hello, I'm Michael August.
I am a researcher, facilitator, and advocate
of self-directed and liberatory education,
from Hampton Roads, Virginia.
Moreover, I am a librarian and an artist.
I am a student, an explorer, a utopian, a dot connector, and a thread weaver.
I am still more, which I may get to share with you, and…
I am glad to make your acquaintance!
Centrally—to me and this site—I believe that the way adults and young people relate to and grow with one another
is at the crux of our shared well-being and sustenance.
The model for this that I advocate for is known as liberatory education, or those practices based in and directed toward freedom, such that we—encompassing all backgrounds, identities, and ages—are free and empowered to trust ourselves, to respect and be respected by others, and to resist forms of oppression that limit such liberation.
What would be useful to all of us—and what I think I have a knack for, generally—is a picture of how things are and illuminating how things may be different.
This may show up through writing, imagery, audio, and video—more essentially, as guides, maps, markers, and field notes.
In this way, I am an aspiring navigator and trailblazer, too.
Alongside these roles, I hope to be a friendly face, a willing hand and voice.
I believe that we—you and I, and all humans—can collaborate and build and persist together.
To the fellow students, searchers, researchers, caregivers, artists, visionaries, information specialists, activists, and dreamers:
as we create a common sense of what is and what can be, let's find ourselves together!
